BACT Celebrates Earth Day with Community Planting at Pederson Preserve

April 22, 2025

This Earth Day, the Barrington Area Conservation Trust (BACT) continued its longstanding collaboration with District 220 and the BHS Horticulture Department, bringing together over 300 students and community volunteers to plant 650 native plants and grasses at Pederson Preserve.

All plants were grown in the Barrington High School greenhouse and carefully selected for their ecological value. Cardinal Flower, known for its vibrant red blooms and value to pollinators, and Prairie Dropseed, a native sedge with a deep root system ideal for erosion control, were planted to protect the preserve’s isolated wetlands and support the Flint Creek/Spring Creek watershed.
